Sip, Savor & Celebrate!

Dear Friends,

In September, the entire state participates in the annual ritual of roasting the latest harvest of our famous green chile. The scent lingering from local roasters is distinctly New Mexican and can be experienced in every community across the state. Grown at high elevation and in sandy terrain, our signature chiles produce rich flavors sought after the world over.

A Bottle Of Wine And A Glass Of Wine On A Table

This month chile and wine enthusiasts unite! September 27th through October 1st, the Santa Fe Wine and Chile Fiesta kicks off its 32nd successful year. The Fiesta highlights the culinary masters, winemakers and sommeliers versed in the authentic flavors of New Mexico. Taking place just blocks from the hotel on the expansive greens at Fort Marcy Park, a compound surrounded by weeping cottonwoods, it’s the perfect reason to raise a glass to one of my favorite seasons!

Did you know that New Mexico produces approximately one million cases of wine annually? With over 45 wineries across the state and over 1,200 acres of vineyards, it’s no wonder we’ve become a destination for wine tours and tastings.  New Mexico’s elevation, dry climate and soil provide ideal conditions for vine growth, resulting in a healthy crop of grapes to start the complex process of vinification. Each bottle of wine produced in New Mexico tells a unique story of the people involved in the incredible drama of wine making.

Rows Of Green Plants

One of my favorite wines – and not just because it’s New Mexican – is Gruet Blanc de Noirs. It’s light, bubbly and refreshing, especially during the sizzling summer months! The story of the Gruet winemakers is distinctly American yet infused with the influence of French Champagne and the many centuries of trial and error behind the iconic grape. First planted by the Romans in the 5th century in northeast France, Champagne has evolved from a pinkish still wine to the sparking decadence we enjoy today. In 1983 Gilbert Gruet, an established French Champagne-maker, was traveling through New Mexico when he encountered a group of European winemakers who had successfully planted vineyards near Truth or Consequences. There, he discovered a soil and climate ideal for planting Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes. The prospect of producing wine in the Land of Enchantment was so enticing to Gilbert, that one year later, he and his entire family embarked on an American winemaking adventure. Today the Gruet label is celebrated throughout the state for its free spirit and commitment to excellence.

A Group Of Bottles Of Wine

Don’t miss the Grand Tasting where over 100 select wines are paired with flavors concocted by 60 local chefs for a dynamic pairing of the senses. It is not-to-be-missed! Meet our very own Chef Lane Warner and our Chef de Cuisine Rafael Zamora – they will be on hand dishing out spicy barbacoa tacos and red snapper ceviche.

And don’t forget to save time for an autumn visit to Ski Santa Fe! This time of year, the Sangre de Cristo mountains become a shimmering canopy of gold aspens reminding us winter is near. Ride the chairlift to the top and take in some of the best views of our wonderful city.

Salud!
