Our History

Explore the story behind La Fonda on the Plaza™

La Fonda on the Plaza holds a coveted place in Santa Fe history, a component in a rich tapestry of hospitality that predates American independence. City records indicate that La Fonda sits on the site of the town's first inn, established when the city was founded by Spaniards in 1607, making our property the oldest hotel corner in America.

The Art of La Fonda

Highlights of the Art at La Fonda

The wholly owned art collection of La Fonda on the Plaza began at the hotel’s inception, and has grown considerably over the years. Paintings by the best Pueblo artists were acquired in the early years and Sam and Ethel Ballen carried on that tradition followed by Jenny Kimball, all supporting Santa Fe’s famed Indian Market and acquiring work by Native Americans and other artists for the hotel.

What Guests are Saying About La Fonda
They remodeled the hotel last year and did an excellent job making it more appealing and open. We have traditionally stayed at other hotels when visiting but staying at La Fonda was a real treat - the service was excellent and being right in the square was a huge plus - so close to the shops and amenities. We love the traditional southwest architecture and La Fonda did not disappoint! –Rory L.
Very much enjoyed our stay last weekend. Sometimes "Historic Hotels" are outdated, but La Fonda has been maintained, and rooms are quite nice. We had a reservation issue (our fault, not the hotels) and dealt with the front desk. In spite of having a large wedding party and a full hotel, they found a way to accommodate us. I love hotels that go above and beyond to service guests. We enjoyed the hotel bar in the evening, and my wife had fun shopping the hotel stores. All around a terrific experience. –Phoenix, AZ
We always stay at the La Fonda when we travel to Santa Fe. It has the feel of old Santa Fe with modern comfort. The new owners have redone many of the rooms, but kept the ambiance of the old hotel. It is centrally located on the Plaza with most everything within walking distance. The restaurant has great food and we love the Bell Tower bar for sunset margaritas. We've stayed in many types of rooms over the years. Some have working fireplaces. I love that my grandfather stayed here years ago as well. –Durango, CO
My wife and I have been coming to Santa Fe over Christmas for fifteen (15) years. The La Fonda has always been our choice and has given us unparalleled excellent service. The historic significance of the hotel is noteworthy and the location could not be better. If I could give La Fonda six stars...I would. –Mountain View, CA
