New Mexico has long been known for its independent women. In the 1800s, unlike most of the world, Santa Fe women ran their own businesses, rented their own houses, and hired shepherds to herd their flocks of sheep.
The first large caravan to arrive on the Santa Fe Trail consisted of 81 men (probably without their independent-minded women) in 23 wagons. They brought goods purchased for $35,000 — mostly clothing, fabrics, and looking glasses — which they sold in Santa Fe for $180,000.
La Fonda was a favorite gathering spot for writers and artists to take "tea" during Prohibition. Willa Cather was one who stayed at the hotel while writing her 1927 novel Death Comes for the Archbishop.
Since Sam and Ethel Ballen bought the hotel from the Harvey Company in 1968, La Fonda has remained a family-owned hotel, an increasingly rare phenomenon. The Ballen heirs maintain majority ownership in La Fonda today.
La Fonda and its sister Harvey Hotel, the Alvarado in Albuquerque, were unusual for their time as elegant hotels that did not discriminate, a policy that continued through World War II when they were known for serving Japanese.
