Drumroll, please. As we do in spring/summer, we’ve changed up La Plazuela’s menu. Now don’t worry, your favorites are still there. We know that whether you’re a visitor from far away or live right around the corner, we know what you like. And we rely on Chef Lane to cook up both the tried and true and new dishes with flair and seasonal ingredients.

He’s definitely done it at lunch with our new chilled mango gazpacho and heirloom tomato salad with baby greens and feta. Chef heads to the Santa Fe Farmers’ Market every Tuesday and Saturday to pick those gorgeous ‘maters before they’re gone. What says summer more than that? Maybe the new strawberry, avocado and chickpea salad? It’s light yet delicious and filling. Or try the turkey quesadilla with chipotle barbeque sauce for a perk-me-up.

Got a bigger appetite? Chef’s reimagined our rainbow trout entrée with red pepper polenta and an aji amarilla-papaya butter sauce. Say that three times fast! Or maybe a chile-rubbed pork tenderloin is more your style? You can always rely on our Northern New Mexican specialties – rellenos de La Fonda, enchiladas, carne asada or fajitas. It’s all amazing.

At dinner, you must, must, must try the tableside guacamole. We’re famous for it, and you get to customize it to your taste. It’s dinner and a show! We also love making a feast of appetizers, and two of our new ones are perfect for sharing: the meal-sized camarones (jumbo shrimp) rellenos served with jalapeno bacon, and the turkey adobo tamal. The rich turkey meat and creamy goat cheese dance on your tongue.

Of course, Chef’s come up with some new mouth-watering dinner entrees, too. Try the pan-seared pork tenderloin medallions with grilled sweet corn-black bean salad and a BBQ-chipotle vinaigrette. Guests can’t stop talking about it! The char-grilled, free range chicken breast with mango cream, green chile chutney and roasted garlic mashed potatoes is also an excellent choice – you’ll feel virtuous enough to order dessert.
There’s news at The Bell Tower Bar too, now open Monday through Friday from 3 to twilight, and weekends from noon to twilight. Welcome new manager Martin Tenorio, who’ll make sure you drink, nibble and relax on Santa Fe’s best rooftop patio, now with additional seating. We’ve added some fresh choices to the Bell Tower offerings: grilled chicken Caesar, mango gazpacho and a shrimp ceviche join the (5!) quesadillas and freshly made guac and salsa. The raspberry sorbet and a caramel brownie will satisfy your sweet tooth, too. Because who doesn’t need a little sugar bump in the afternoon, right?

Mango Gazpacho - Yields 1/2 Gallon
| This recipe is a sweeter variation of gazpacho soup that combines juicy mangoes and red bell pepper, cucumber, orange juice, lime juice and basil. It makes a tasty starter for light summer meals. We are now serving this in La Plazuela and up on the Bell Tower.

Live at La Fonda
You all know of our affection for Bill Hearne, who must hold the record for most performances at La Fonda. When he recommends a singer or a band to help us entertain guests, we book ‘em. That’s how Tom Williams Band came to us, fronted by, you guessed it, Tom Williams. Tom’s been playing music all his life, doing it in Santa Fe for 40 years. So it’s surprising that his trio, known for their pure country played by heart, with heart, is making their La Fonda debut only this month. Maybe because Tom, Bob Mowell and Art Maya are now retired and can devote all their energy to getting people up and dancing.
Tom Williams Band
Tom plays keyboard, bass and guitar. He’s opened for such acts as Mel Street, Ray Price, George Jones and Sue Thompson. Born and raised in Tennessee, his Southern drawl is still as strong and smooth as straight whiskey. But it disappears into the Stevie Ray Vaughn, Merle Haggard and other classic country tunes the band plays. He is known for his strong country vocal and raspy Motown voice. Bob’s strummed guitar with bands that opened for Ricky Skaggs, Vince Gill and Randy Travis, among others. Art, also on guitar and signature steel guitar, hails from Texas and has played with various bands throughout the Southwest for many years, favoriting Western swing and the country music of the past. The trio adds bluegrass and country swing, old school rock and even a few Motown favorites to their crowd-pleasing set list. And they love audience requests.
“We’re real intuitive with the crowd – we recognize what they like and try to make everyone happy,” says Tom. “If we don’t know a song we’ll do another song by that artist. And if you can’t dance to it, we won’t play it. I learned that from my time in Nashville.”

June’s high time at El Rancho de los Golondrinas. They kick off summer with Spring & Fiber Fest (June 2-3): traditional ranch activities like sheep shearing, wool dyeing, spinning and weaving. Plus a fiber arts marketplace, bread baking and crafts for kids! The Herb & Lavender Festival (June 17-18) celebrates lavender and herb products along with lectures and hands-on activities on all things lavender. Then enjoy the 11th Annual ¡Viva México! Combine the thought-provoking aspects of science with the experiential pleasures of a summer festival at Santa Fe Institute’s first annual InterPlanetary Festival (June 7-8). Seeking to change the world one planet at a time, with the hope that every earthling can more readily understand whole, living planets. Sounds like a gas (planet)! And don’t forget the 69th Annual Rodeo de Santa Fe (June 20-23) and The Rodeo Clown Reunion – a colorful and hilarious occasion for all ages when these characters of yesterday don their familiar make-up and costumes. Parents, this is your child’s chance to try their riding skills aboard a sheep or mutton bustin’. Head downtown for Saturday’s parade, too.
Santa Fe Fashion Week is a can’t miss for fashionistas and design mavens (June 21-23) with runway shows, mix and mingles with Project Runway designers, including Ava Capra from America's Top Model, and other industry men and women. The City Different flies its rainbow colors with the annual Pride Parade and festival (June 30). And we get up early July 4th for the 43rd annual Pancakes on the Plaza, the most fun you can have eating carbs surrounded by thousands of your closest friends and neighbors. Wander the vintage and classic car show, listen to Santa Fe Performance Band, Manzanares and Westin McPowell and Friends, support the arts and crafts vendors, or simply soak in the local color.
Music & DanceKick up your heels and dance, dance, dance when Santa Fe Bandstand’s free summer music festival on the Santa Fe Plaza kicks off with Chuck Profit & The Mission Express and Felix y Los Gatos (June 21) and continues weeknights through mid-August. The line up (if we listed them all we’d never finish!) includes Album Hour with Joe West (June 27), Boris McCutcheon (June 28) and Bill Hearne Trio (July 5).
The Lensic always wows us with its eclectic offerings. Catch the 90s darlings, Big Head Todd & The Monsters (June 5), Aspen Santa Fe Ballet’s contemporary dance magic (July 14) and local favorite Juan Siddi Flamenco (July 20). Dance is back with Pilobolus (July 24). The Bridge at Santa Fe Brewing Company spices up their outdoor stage with hip hop’s Flatbush Zombies (June 11), Calexico with opening act Julia Jacklin (June 13) and rapper Snow Tha Product (June 27). Meanwhile, Meow Wolf continues its always-intriguing line up of shows: A Place to Bury Strangers (June 5), Max Cooper at the InterPlanetary Festival (June 8), Itchy-O (June 9-11), Mitski (June 14), and Dirty Projectors (June 28).
The Railyard is where Santa Fe comes to meet friends and neighbors, to gather with family, and experience free live performances. Free music in June includes Las Cafeteras and Making Movies (June 2), Ozomatli, (June 7), world music remixer HAT (June 9), Americana darlings Birds of Chicago (June 16), Bright Light Social Hour (June 23) and Peruvian groovesters La Chamba (June 30).
The Santa Fe Opera opens with Candide (June 29 – August 25) and Madame Butterfly (June 30 – August 24) and continues through August with classics The Italian Girl in Algiers (July 21 - August 17) and Ariadne Auf Naxos (July 28 - August 23). This year’s Opera debut, Doctor Atomic (July 14 – August 16) by John Adams, directed by Peter Sellars is the perfect fusion of venue and subject. Learn more about Doctor Atomic in a conversation with Sellars, moderated by Sam Donaldson at the Lensic (July 8), and see the film Wonders Are Many: The Making Of Doctor Atomic at the CCA, with Sellars and Adams in person (July 12). The Trinity Test, a presentation by Jim Hopkins, John Hopkins and Ellen Bradbury, will take place June 14th from 6pm-8pm at La Fonda. $10 at the door, in the Lumpkin’s ballroom.
Since the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival was founded in 1972, it has become one of the world’s preeminent music festivals, guided by a visionary spirit and dedicated to artistic excellence and innovation. Here’s a sneak peek of this season’s schedule (July 15 – Aug. 20). July is also the time for the 13th Annual New Mexico Jazz Festival. This year’s more than 2 weeks of impressive performers in Santa Fe and Albuquerque include Eric Bibb (July 15), a film screening and concert with Dave Grusin (July 22), NEA Jazz Masters AB Spellman and Dee Dee Bridgewater (July 27), and Chucho Valdes & Gonzalo Rubalcaba (July 28).
Film & PerformanceThe Railyard’s free movie series starts with a roar from The Lion King (June 1), continuing the fun with The Jerk (June 15). Bring your (well-behaved) dogs to Lady & The Tramp (June 29), but not to Cry Baby (July 13). The shows continue through August, so check back for more.
At the MuseumsEl Museo Cultural welcomes back CURRENTS New Media Festival (June 8-24), a spectacular showcase of interactive and non-interactive installations, multimedia performances, virtual reality environments, video, animation, experimental documentary, web based/app art forms, robotics and 3D printing. The NM Museum of History complements the Opera’s Doctor Atomic with its own journey into New Mexico’s nuclear past. Atomic Histories opens June 3, exploring the most famous events, sometimes little-known stories, and inventions born here which impact our lives, and helps to recognize the remarkable contributions of thousands of people involved in writing New Mexico’s Atomic Histories for the last 75 years. Center for Contemporary Arts presents Ricardo Mazal: A 15 Year Survey (June 8-Sept. 23), an exploration of the work of this extraordinary artist over the past two decades. While you’re there, check out A Clip of Petals, a visual commentary on the pressing issue of gun control, mass shootings and the environment from artist Joerael Elliott (through Aug. 5).
Tickets will be going fast for the 2018 International Folk Art Market (July 13-15), the largest event of its kind, voted the Best Art Festival by USA Today’s Reader’s Choice Awards, where 162 master folk artists representing 53 countries and Nobel Peace Prize-Winner Dr. Muhammad Yunus as Honorary Chair, mix with thousands of visitors for the largest folk art event in the world. Put on your own folk art and support these international entrepreneurs! The annual One World Dinner will be held at La Fonda on Saturday July 12th. Action/Abstraction Redefined opens July 27 with paintings and works on paper from the IAIA Museum of Contemporary Native Arts (MoCNA) permanent collection created in the 1960s and 1970s, one of Santa Fe’s hidden treasures.
SpeakersThe Fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, according to Pulitzer Prize winner and journalist, Elizabeth Kolbert (June 1). That’s the subject of her talk, presented by School for Advanced Research and The Nature Conservancy of New Mexico. Santa Fe Art Institute presents their premier event, The Art of Change, with Ira Glass of This American Life and Storycatchers Theatre of Chicago (June 9) at the Lensic. This evening of storytelling, artist presentations and more can’t be missed! Want to be on TV? Be part of the Ageless Living live conference, being recorded at the Lensic for a 2019 PBS national series. Launched in March at the KiMo Theater in Albuquerque, Ageless Living presents an engaging, informative celebration of life and wisdom (June 16-17, Sept. 7-8) at the Lensic.
