Jenny's View

Friends,

French writer and philosopher Simone de Beauvoir said when she stayed here in 1947, “The La Fonda is the most beautiful hotel in America, perhaps the most beautiful I’ve ever seen in my life.” That quote prefaces La Fonda Then And Now, our unique, beautifully illustrated history of the hotel. If you have ever visited La Fonda, you’ll find this book a wonderful, historic memory of your stay.

Simone de Beauvoir

Simone De Beauvoir In A Red Shirt Is Looking At The Camera

Our Beverage Manager, Carla Gilfillan, took inspiration from that book, quote, and from the long list of famous folks who have stayed at La Fonda over the years to remake our La Fiesta Lounge cocktail menu. “I studied philosophy in college and when I saw that Simone de Beauvoir had stayed here, I knew that I had to create a cocktail in her honor,” says Carla. “I wanted to invent cocktails that were creative, classic and elegant, and tell the story of La Fonda’s history with drinks.”

Carla Gilfillan

A Man That Is Standing In The Grass

And boy has Carla hit the bullseye! In addition to the Simone de Beauvoir, a fragrant mix of Torres brandy, port, ginger syrup, lemon juice and a lemon twist, Carla’s put her own twist on a traditional Manhattan. The Oppenheimer Manhattan, taking its name from Manhattan Project director Robert Oppenheimer, features Byrrh Quinquina (a French fortified wine with botanicals that is similar to sweet vermouth) and grapefruit bitters.

The menu also celebrates Santa Fe’s ties to Spain and Mexico with a Catalonian-style Spanish G&T combining Hayman’s London Dry gin, fresh thyme, lemon peel, juniper berries, and Fever Tree Mediterranean Tonic. There’s also the Across the Border, marrying El Tesoro Reposado Tequila or Rayu Mezcal, grapefruit and lime juice, Amaro Nonino and ginger beer with an Alderwood smoked salt rim.

And because a great drink doesn’t have to be alcoholic, and there are many reasons why you might choose not to imbibe, she also came up with an inventive choice of mocktails. These non-alcoholic beverages allow everyone to have a fun, special cocktail experience. In fact, one of Santa Fe’s favorite summer visitors, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, gets her own honorary mocktail. (We don’t know whether she indulges or not, but you know the saying “sober as a judge?” We’re playing it safe.) The RBG is a refreshing combo of ginger beer, grapefruit and mint.

Carla also noted that La Fonda on the Plaza was named 2018 Sustainability Champion by Historic Hotels of America, and has accordingly featured some tequilas and mezcals on the menu which represent the very best of their categories. Like La Fonda, these purveyors are independently-owned and committed to sustainability. You can choose them in one of our popular margaritas or in new tasting flights. And don’t forget to stamp your Margarita Trail passport when you try the famous Don Rael margarita, too!

A Close Up Of Food

La Fiesta Lounge was already one of the best locations in Santa Fe for sipping cocktails and mocktails, coupled with delicious food, where you could also hear some great music – for visitors and locals alike. Congrats, Carla, the new cocktail menu has raised the bar (hee, hee).

Anyone thirsty yet?

The Gold Souls

When one drives from Sacramento to New Orleans, gigging along the way, one naturally stops in Santa Fe. Right? Absolutely, says Juniper Waller, vocalist for The Gold Souls, making their La Fiesta debut on April 17.  The Sacramento band from California’s capital city brings the driving grooves of funk, the rich textures of soul, and the compelling storytelling of the blues to our capital city. Drawing from a variety of influences and experiences, The Gold Souls deliver captivating lyrics and fresh arrangements over a vintage sound.

Led by the dynamic Waller, the group is made up of young talent hailing from the San Francisco and Sacramento areas. With Matt Hevesh on guitar, Alex Severson on the keys, Billy D. Thompson on the drums, and Jace Dorn on bass, each member has a hand in writing and song composition, making The Gold Souls a truly collaborative effort.

The group’s been together about two years, having released an EP and a full-length album called Good to Feel last year. Their latest single, True Blue, was produced and engineered by multi-Grammy winner Timothy Bloom and was released this February. They’re hitting the road to promote the album, and are excited to play their lively mix of danceable and relaxing tunes, many original but also some recognizable covers thrown in, for the appreciative La Fiesta audience.

“All of us have been to Santa Fe before, and have fond memories of spending time in Santa Fe. I went to the Opera and spent time downtown myself. It’s great to be able to return,” says Waller.

The Gold Souls have a new music video out, and will release another single right before they arrive in Santa Fe. You can see and hear both at their website, thegoldsouls.com

At the Museums

Social & Sublime: Land, Place, and Art, a new exhibition at the New Mexico Art Museum looks at land through the ideological frameworks of wilderness, frontier, landscape and ecology to explore shifting views of nature as an artistic subject across the 20th century. This exhibition presents a series of perspectives relating to how American artists used land and place in their work in dialogue with the social, aesthetic, political, and cultural viewpoints that have shaped our understanding of land (opens Apr. 13).

Don’t miss The Great Unknown: Artists at Glen Canyon and Lake Powell at the NM Art Museum (through Sept. 15), with an opening reception April. 5. The Colorado River is a critical source of life in the arid canyons of northern Arizona and southern Utah. Generations of people from near and far have been inspired by its beauty and power. The show uses photographs, paintings and writings to tell the stories of several groups of like-minded people who made repeated visits to the area known as Glen Canyon on the Colorado, Glen Canyon Dam and the resultant Lake Powell.

You’ve still got time to see three exhibitions at CCA. The first is the multimedia installation Tom Joyce: Tc (Curie Point), which suspends nearly 25,000 lbs. of obsolete equipment, supplies, tools and other objects that were once incorporated, made, used and/or laid to rest in the artist's studio (through Apr. 21). The second is Sharon Bartel Clements: Warrior Women Torso Project exploring what it means to embody a warrior (through Apr. 21). The last is Jeremy Thomas: Unintended Consequences (through Apr. 21). Beginning with cut steel sheets, Thomas’s sculptures are then inflated with compressed air once the metal has been forge-heated to elasticity. The result is a pleasantly surprising byproduct of the artist's own relationship with serendipity, chance, and the manipulation of natural elements. Chat with Thomas as he collaborates with the wind to produce three drawings created by giant pencils (Apr. 6).
