La Plazuela Unfolds

While Santa Fe is a delight at any time, June ushers in warm sunny days with dazzling blue skies and crisp, cool evenings! If you haven’t experienced a Santa Fe sunset - or you can’t resist an encore - then we invite you to do so at our rooftop Bell Tower Bar, which offers smashing cocktails and breathtaking vistas.

In addition to The City Different’s astounding collection of art galleries, you will have the opportunity June 11 to 14 to experience Santa Fe’s first SOFA WEST, the internationally-acclaimed art fair featuring 3-dimensional contemporary artworks; a rich mingling of fine art, decorative art and design. It will be amazing!

If you are a music aficionado, then the 10th Annual Thirsty Ear Festival the weekend of June 12 to 14, is a must-hear. It is one of New Mexico’s premier music festivals featuring dozens of blues, folk, bluegrass, alt-country, rock & world music artists on four stages. The Santa Fe Opera will be extraordinary this season, and La Fonda has a great selection of weekend tickets available if you’re planning on staying with us between July 4 and August 14. Call our Concierge at 505-995-2333.

The 60th Annual Rodeo de Santa Fe comes to town June 24 to 27, and it will be rough and tumble and fun! And, if a more elegant equine experience appeals, then the Grand Prix de Santa Fe’s Sixth Annual Charity Horse Jumping Event takes place at Las Campanas Santa Fe from June 25 to 28.

There are lots of La Fonda stories and we thought it would be fun to share a few that you might not have heard. It was not until after 1822, when the Santa Fe Trail opened, that the hotels name popped up in journals and diaries and the stories began. Did you know that early on the hotel boasted gaming tables and they were the “lure for all classes of Santa Fe Society,” noted New Mexico historian, Ralph Emerson Twitchell? Did you know that the circa 1920s patio and fountain – where La Plazuela is now – was flooded each winter and turned into a skating rink? And, did you know that Lalo Ortega, our Bell Captain, has been escorting guests to their rooms for over 60 years? We estimate that he’s probably hefted 480,000 suitcases and unlocked 250,000 doors – and loved every minute of it!
